LG pushes for AI-driven, citizen-centric policing

New Delhi: Delhi LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday directed Delhi Police to adopt a proactive, citizen-centric and technology-driven policing model while emphasizing that the safety of women, children and senior citizens was “completely non-negotiable”.The directions were issued during a review meeting chaired by LG at Police Headquarters which was attended by the commissioner of police, all special commissioners, joint commissioners and deputy commissioners of police.Emphasising the need for a humane and preventive policing approach, LG Sandhu asked officers to remain approachable, empathetic and highly visible in public spaces. LG added that public trust can be strengthened only through fairness, transparency and timely action.He instructed officers to identify potential crime scenes, pre-empt street crimes, and pay special attention to the safety of girl students.The LG mandated the adoption of modern policing technologies, instructing the force to leverage AI, drones, facial recognition systems, and social media monitoring for crime prevention besides continuous skill enhancement of personnel, particularly in handling cybercrimes and sensitive POCSO cases.Addressing traffic management, LG sought strict enforcement against violations. He asked for a stronger traffic police presence at major congestion points while encouraging behavioural change among commuters.Sandhu also underlined the importance of community participation, directing police to actively engage resident welfare associations, market welfare associations and street vendors to build a stronger local intelligence network.Reviewing internal administration, LG emphasised personnel welfare, transparent transfer policies, timely promotions and greater representation of women in the force.
