Mapusa: Heavy monsoon showers triggered widespread waterlogging across parts of the Mapusa municipal market on Monday evening, disrupting business activity and rekindling concerns over the town’s persistent drainage woes.Water accumulated rapidly in several internal market lanes, partially submerging parked two-wheelers and encircling several commercial establishments. Traders and residents blamed recurring drainage failures, alleging that the system continued to buckle under rainfall despite repeated maintenance and infrastructure works.Several traders questioned the quality and effectiveness of the drainage upgrades undertaken by the municipality, claiming the network was incapable of handling even moderate spells of rain.“If it rains continuously for an entire day, we may have no choice but to stay home because the market lanes will be flooded. I am worried that goods could be damaged. Many traders suffered losses during the last monsoon season,” said a trader. The flooding revived memories of last year’s monsoon, when prolonged waterlogging affected businesses and caused financial losses to several shopkeepers.Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza visited the affected low-lying areas to assess the situation and review the impact on commercial activity. He attributed the flooding largely to a blockage in the main drainage line near the bus stand, caused by a large plastic bag that obstructed the flow of rainwater.MMC administrator Fiona Cardoz said the municipality would undertake an immediate drive to clear accumulated garbage in and around Mapusa. She added that efforts were under way to strengthen drainage management and improve cleanliness and sanitation across the town.D’Souza said the MMC had deployed teams round the clock to clear drain blockages, pump out stagnant water and closely monitor flood-prone locations within the market to minimise disruptions during the monsoon season.
