Benefits of yoga to reach every door in 6 Assam districts

Guwahati: Two flagship initiatives unveiled by Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, on the occasion of International Day of Yoga — PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan and ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’ — will be rolled out in six districts during the first phase of implementation, officials said, on Monday.The initiatives will initially cover Kamrup, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Jorhat, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur before being expanded to other parts of the state.Conceived in line with PM Narendra Modi’s vision, the ‘PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan’ aims to popularise yoga across Assam by taking its message and benefits to every village, household and citizen.The second initiative, ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’, focuses on recognising and honouring unsung heroes from various fields whose contributions have positively impacted society.Marking the International Day of Yoga, Governor Acharya had joined a yoga session in Sualkuchi. Referring to the town as a symbol of self-reliance, he praised its weavers for their role in safeguarding and promoting Assam’s rich handloom heritage.Speaking on the significance of the two initiatives, the Governor said these would contribute to the creation of a healthier, conscious and self-confident Assam. He said, “while yoga strengthens the body and mind, the works and ideals of great personalities strengthen the soul of the society.”On the occasion, Acharya also paid tribute to Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Maniram Dewan and numerous known and unknown heroes of Assam.
