Guwahati: Ambubachi Mahayog, the biggest religious congregation of the northeast, will begin on Monday, with the doors to the sanctum sanctorum of the Kamakhya temple closing at 9.08 pm for three days.The Mahayog is celebrated to mark the annual menstruation cycle of the Goddess Kamakhya. The doors of the sanctum sanctorum will re-open to devotees on June 26. The devotees will be allowed to enter the temple after the Ambubachi ritual are completed.According to the unofficial records provided by temple authorities, around 2,000 sadhus from various parts of the country have already gathered at the temple for tantric practices.Prabir Sarma, a priest (doloi) at the Shakti Peeth, said as per govt records, a total footfall of 7-8 lakh was recorded last year. “The unofficial figure is higher than the official figure. But, the fact is that the temple has witnessed an increase of around 1-1.5 lakh every year on an average,” he added.The Kamrup (Metro) district administration said to facilitate public convenience and ensure smoother traffic movement, repair, maintenance and beautification works are being carried out at various locations across the city.“Due to these activities, temporary traffic congestion may occur on certain roads, and travel may take longer than usual. Therefore, the district administration has requested citizens to plan their journeys, and keep some extra time in hand while attending meetings, appointments, events or any other important engagements,” a press release read.The district administration added that the traffic police department is making every effort to ensure the smooth regulation of vehicular movement and to minimise inconvenience to the public as much as possible.“Citizens are requested to extend their cooperation and understanding during this period and advise them to follow traffic advisories issued from time to time. The patience, cooperation and support of the public will play a vital role in ensuring a safe, orderly and pleasant experience not only for the residents of the city but also for the devotees and pilgrims visiting the Ambubachi Mela,” the release stated.
