Dhubri: A dilapidated RCC bridge over the Biskhowa rivulet in Biskhowa village under the Golokganj sector of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Dhubri district has become a major source of inconvenience for residents of several border villages.Border villagers alleged that the bridge was constructed in 2001 when late Dinesh Chandra Sarker represented the Golokganj legislative constituency. They said the bridge’s approach portions on both sides were washed away during the 2017 floods, leaving locals to improvise a temporary connection.“However, a portion of both sides’ approach to the bridge was washed away during the devastating floods in 2017, and then villagers themselves somehow connected the stretch with bamboos,” president of Simanta Chetana Manch, Purvottar, Babul Roy, said.Roy added that the bridge at Biskhowa was not the only structure in poor condition, adding that several bridges constructed during Sarker’s tenure require fresh construction because they are no longer usable for vehicles.Roy said not only the bridge at Biskhowa but few other bridges constructed during former legislator Dinesh Chandra Sarker’s tenure need to be freshly constructed as no vehicle can run on them.Villagers alleged they face serious hardships during medical emergencies while travelling from their villages to the nearest public health centre and the hospital at Satrasal. They also said students struggle to cross, especially when the rivulet is in spate.Villagers urged the govt to construct the bridge at the earliest. An official of the Golokganj Development Block said preparations were underway to identify urgent infrastructure works in the area.
