Dibrugarh: Sivasagar police, led by SSP Papori Chetia, on Sunday carried out an area domination exercise along the inter-state border with Nagaland, walking on foot across rugged terrain to assess security arrangements and reinforce police presence in the sensitive border belt.The exercise was carried out to maintain peace, security and public order along the Assam-Nagaland border, which Sivasagar shares with Nagaland for a stretch of 57.8 km along its southern and south-eastern boundary, covering areas such as Nazira, Geleki and the Bihubor region.The team traversed the rough, hilly border terrain on foot, inspecting patrol routes and interacting with personnel deployed at outposts along the boundary. Strict police patrolling continues across the border areas as part of Sivasagar police’s ongoing initiative to ensure public safety and security.SSP Chetia said the operation was part of a sustained effort to keep the border region secure. “Area domination exercises like this allow us to maintain a strong and visible presence in our border areas. Our personnel are familiar with every stretch of this terrain, and such operations help us respond quickly to any threat while reassuring residents living along the border that the police are with them,” she said.Sunday’s exercise comes at a time when Sivasagar police have significantly stepped up vigil along the Assam-Nagaland border in response to a series of security developments linked to Ulfa-I activity in the district over the past month. The hilly, forested terrain along the border — interspersed with tea garden fringes and jungle tracks — has long been considered vulnerable to militant movement and the cross-border flow of arms, cash and operatives between Assam and Nagaland.The heightened security posture follows a midnight raid on May 6 in the Palengi area, led by SSP Chetia, which resulted in the arrest of self-styled Sergeant Major Biren Chetia alias Rontu Asom, a Myanmar-trained Ulfa-I militant found sheltering in Dhyanpathar village under Demow Police Station. The operation led to the recovery of an Italy-made Beretta pistol, seven hand grenades, one bottle grenade and live ammunition from the militant, who police said crossed into Assam from Nagaland after travelling from Myanmar.Less than three weeks later, on May 25, a police team foiled an alleged Ulfa-I-linked extortion attempt at Bogidol in Nazira targeting a local businessman, resulting in a gunbattle in which two suspects sustained bullet injuries. Investigators later said the gang demanded Rs 20 lakh in the name of Ulfa-I and also planned to abduct the businessman.Against this backdrop, Sunday’s foot march along the border is being seen as a continuation of the district police’s intensified vigil strategy. Officials said such ground-level exercises help maintain constant visibility in remote border stretches that are otherwise difficult to monitor regularly.Sivasagar Police reiterated that patrolling and area domination exercises along the Assam-Nagaland border would continue as part of its special initiative to ensure that no anti-national elements can establish a foothold in the district, while also maintaining law and order for residents of the border villages.
