Gurgaon: A five-member committee has been constituted to identify suitable land for the collection and processing of freshly generated municipal waste. The move follows directions from Union ministry of housing and urban affairs to stop the accumulation of fresh waste at the Bandhwari landfill site, where over 18 lakh metric tonnes of waste are currently lying.During a review meeting held on May 28, Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar assessed the progress of legacy waste remediation at Bandhwari and directed officials to ensure that freshly generated waste is no longer dumped at the landfill. He instructed authorities to identify a separate site for handling and processing new waste.Following the directions, the administration recently constituted a committee comprising MCG additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav, Swachh Bharat Mission joint commissioner Preet Pal Singh, district revenue officer Vijay Yadav, district development and panchayat officer Navneet Kaur, and MCG tehsildar Harkesh Gupta.The committee has been asked to submit its report this week. Officials have not disclosed the locations under consideration, though sources said a land parcel near Pataudi and Farrukhnagar is among the options being examined. The report is expected to guide further action by the district administration and MCG.“We have already directed Faridabad to stop dumping fresh waste at Bandhwari. They will be given a week to make alternative arrangements,” a senior MCG official said. The civic body has also re-floated the tender for processing the city’s fresh waste.Bandhwari landfill has remained a major environmental concern for Gurgaon and Faridabad for years. During his May 28 visit, Khattar directed MCG officials to clear the legacy waste at the site within a year and submit daily progress reports. He stressed that sanitation remains the primary responsibility of municipal corporations.
