Dibrugarh: In a major haul, Lakhimpur police have busted an inter-state mobile theft gang and recovered 146 stolen mobile phones, 524 mobile batteries, and a large number of mobile phone parts from a rented house at Chapori Gaon under North Lakhimpur Police Station in Lakhimpur district.During a raid on Thursday, police arrested six persons in connection with the case — four from Murshidabad district of West Bengal and two locals from Lakhimpur.The accused from Murshidabad have been identified as Sharif Sheikh, Noorman Sheikh, Saidul Sheikh, and Abdul Rahman, while the two local youths arrested are Jeherul Ali and Buddhajyoti Baruah, both residents of Laluk in Lakhimpur.The recovered items include 86 smartphones and 60 keypad phones, among which several high-end devices, including iPhones, were found. Police also seized 131 brass bangles and numerous mobile phone components from the possession of the accused.Lakhimpur SSP Gunendra Deka said the gang from Murshidabad had been renting a house at Chapori Gaon for several months and systematically carrying out mobile thefts across Lakhimpur during this period. The two local youths allegedly assisted the gang in their operations.“What began as a single complaint of mobile theft led us to an entire gang operating out of a rented house. The scale of what we found was significant — six arrests and the recovery of a large cache of stolen phones, batteries, and accessories,” SSP Deka said.He added that interrogation of the accused is underway and further legal action is in progress.A police official involved in the operation said, “The story began with one complaint but ended with a bang. We followed every lead diligently, and it paid off. This operation has exposed a well-organised inter-state theft network that had been operating in the district for months.”The operation was carried out by a team from North Lakhimpur Police Station. Authorities said investigations are continuing to determine whether the gang had links to similar operations in other districts or states. Further arrests have not been ruled out.Lakhimpur police have urged residents who reported mobile thefts in recent months to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
