Bengaluru: In a case of betrayal and deceit, a policeman has been accused of cheating his friend of gold ornaments worth lakhs.Niranjan, a 37-year-old recording studio owner from Chamarajpet, has accused his friend from college, Upendra Kumar, currently posted as a District Armed Reserve (DAR) police constable in Mandya, of exploiting their friendship to orchestrate a fraud.In Nov last year, Niranjan alleged, Upendra told him that his brother’s wedding was scheduled at a resort and he needed Niranjan’s car and gold chain for the function. He assured that both would be returned the same night.Niranjan asked him to come to his office. As his car was being serviced, he gave him only a gold chain. Upendra took the chain but did not return it the same night.Upendra then allegedly began avoiding his friend. After persistent questioning over the next few days, he claimed that he had pawned the gold chain at a finance company.When Niranjan said that the chain belonged to his younger brother and had to be returned, Upendra asked him to pledge other gold ornaments to retrieve the chain.Niranjan claimed he ended up pawning family jewellery, including his wife’s two gold chains, four bangles belonging to his children, two rings and a pair of earrings, a total of around 49 grams of gold, to get his brother’s chain back.Upendra was now not helping him get back the pawned gold ornaments, Niranjan told police.Chamarajpet station police have filed a case under BNS Section 318 (cheating). The accused will be served a notice soon, an officer said.
