Doctor, family among 4 dead in Lalmati road accident

Guwahati: Four people from Arunachal Pradesh died on the spot after their vehicle crashed into a parked container truck at Lalmati under Khetri Police Station limits on Friday morning.Police identified the deceased as Lingi Basar (55), a doctor; his wife Kunga Dolma (52), who worked with Arunachal Pradesh’s food and civil supplies department; their son Gemar Basar (22); and his friend Karma Sherab Khrimey (22).Khetri PS officer-in-charge Tanmoy Nath said Lingi and his family hailed from Upper Siang district, while Khrimey was from West Kameng. Both Gemar and Karma were medical students at a private college in Tripura.“They were travelling from Arunachal Pradesh to Guwahati to attend a family matter when their vehicle met with an accident. The bodies have been taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination,” Nath said.Joint commissioner of police Ankur Jain said the accident occurred at around 11 am. The vehicle, bearing an Arunachal Pradesh registration and driven by Lingi, was speeding when it rammed into the stationary truck.“According to information, they started their journey at 6 am from Itanagar and booked a room at Arunachal Bhawan in Rupnagar. Examination of the site indicated that the doctor, who was driving the car, did not apply brakes before impact. Eyewitnesses suggest the vehicle was travelling at over 100 kmph,” Jain said.He added that the collision may have occurred because the driver was fatigued and possibly fell asleep at the wheel after driving for several hours. There was no sign of evasive action. The vehicle appeared to drift sideways before crashing, Jain added.A formal investigation was initiated to determine the exact cause and sequence of events leading to the collision.
