Bathinda: The Bathinda district police on Monday claimed to have arrested one person and seized 720 bottles of liquor, which was being smuggled from Haryana in a tractor trailer.The seizure was made late Sunday night at Pathrala village in Bathonda, said the police.Following a tip off, a team from police post Pathrala near Haryana border stopped a tractor trailer. The tractor trailer was being escorted by two persons on a motorcycle and when the police party stopped the tractor, the on the bikers fled, the police added.Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, SHO, Sangat police station, said the trailer was full of fodder and covered with a tarpaulin. When the trailer was searched, 60 cases (720 bottles) of Haryana-made liquor were found concealed under the fodder. The trailer driver, Gurwinder Singh of Bhagwangarh village, was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded.Four more persons have been named in the case registered under the Excise Act, said the SHO, adding that it was yet to be ascertained whether the smuggled liquor was to be used for the municipal elections.
