Mother of jail inmate among 2 arrested for trying to supply him SIMs & batteries

Chandigarh: Prison officials at Burail jail caught two women, including the mother of an inmate, for allegedly attempting to sneak in mobile SIM cards and batteries into the prison Wednesday. Police also registered a case against the inmate they were visiting.The accused were identified as Paramjit Kaur and Jyoti, both residents of Dadmajra Colony, Sector 38. Paramjit Kaur’s son, Rahul, is lodged in Burail jail, Sector 51.Jail officials said Paramjit Kaur and Jyoti arrived at the jail around 3.30pm to meet Rahul and handed over fruits, including guavas and bananas, for him. Suspecting something amiss, jail staff checked the fruits and allegedly recovered two SIM cards and two mobile phone batteries concealed inside them.The jail warder who conducted the search alerted senior officials, who in turn informed the Sector 49 police. A police team reached the jail, and the recovered items were handed over to them.On the complaint of jail authorities, Sector 49 police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Prisons Act against Paramjit Kaur, Jyoti and inmate Rahul.Police arrested both women and took them into custody for questioning. On Thursday, they were produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody.
