Ahmedabad: LD College of Engineering, one of the top govt engineering institutes in Gujarat, is looking at a sweeping infrastructure transformation worth approximately Rs 288 crore. The plan includes three hostels, aimed at expanding hostel capacity to 2,500 students. However, officials say the full build-out could take up to three years. The expansion is also expected to bolster LDCE’s push for a Centre of Excellence designation.The state govt has allocated Rs 100 crore each for two new boys’ hostels, Rs 50 crore for a girls’ hostel, and Rs 38 crore for a student gymkhana. The additions are aimed at expanding residential capacity to 2,500 students: 2,000 for boys and 500 for girls. The planned vertical hostel structures are also expected to ease pressure on existing campus infrastructure.Currently, many LDCE students are forced to seek accommodation outside the campus due to limited hostel availability. With new courses being introduced and an overall academic overhaul underway, student numbers are projected to rise further, making the expansion all the more urgent.“The work at this scale may take up to three years to complete,” an official said. “The plan for the hostels and infrastructure is presented to the state govt and R&B department. Once the necessary permissions are obtained, the work will commence.”The official added that 5- and 10-year development plans have already been submitted. “The infrastructure push is also expected to strengthen LDCE’s bid for a Centre of Excellence (CoE) designation, a proposal that has been in the works and could significantly elevate the institution’s academic and research standing,” the official added.
