Services sector in Gujarat firms weigh flexible work models

Ahmedabad: Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal, several companies in Gujarat’s service sector are gradually implementing a phased work-from-home (WFH) arrangement. While some are still working out the nitty-gritties, others already have a provision of a section of their workforce working from home rotationally. Others are still assessing the feasibility of flexible work models.IT and technology firms, many of which already operate on hybrid systems introduced during the pandemic, are among the early movers. However, industry executives said large-scale remote operations continue to pose logistical and infrastructure-related challenges.“We were already partially operating in a WFH model. Around 50% of our workforce currently has the flexibility to work remotely. Space constraints at the office is also one of the factors,” said Tejinder Oberoi, executive director of Cygnet Infotech.He added that the company will take further decisions depending on operational requirements. “The systems are in place, but handling 85-90% work from home is not easy overnight. Ultimately, execution of the alternative depends on deliverables and output,” Oberoi said.Industry executives said that while companies are operationally prepared for remote working, global business uncertainty continues to make large-scale workforce disruptions difficult.“Post-Covid, most IT companies have already moved towards a hybrid working model, which gives organizations some operational flexibility during situations like these,” said Pranav Pandya, co-founder, DevIT. “At present, we are prepared to allow nearly 20% of the workforce at DevIT, to work remotely, and we can scale that further if required. However, it is a challenging decision for companies given the uncertainty in the geopolitical environment,” said Pandya. “Project timelines are being revised, contract values are under pressure, and many client agreements are being renegotiated. In such a scenario, team-level disruptions are difficult, but we are taking all possible measures while remaining prepared,” he added.Executives said that while service-oriented industries can adopt flexible work systems relatively quickly, sectors dependent on physical operations may not have the same flexibility.Rajesh Power Services Limited is also considering introducing work-from-home arrangements for employees at its corporate office.“In line with the Prime Minister’s appeal to encourage responsible fuel consumption and support efforts towards conserving foreign exchange, Rajesh Power is planning to introduce a work-from-home model for employees at its corporate office. The company is currently finalizing the operational framework for the same,” said Kurang Panchal, managing director of the company.“Such measures can contribute towards efficient resource utilisation while ensuring business continuity through digital and flexible working systems,” Panchal further added.
