Amend anti-sacrilege law: Sikh clergy to CM

Amritsar: The Sikh clergy has again urged the Punjab govt to amend the new anti-sacrilege law in accordance with Sikh sentiments, asking it to shed its rigid stance. The demand came after Golden Temple head granthi held a special meeting with the Singh Sahibans, Akal Takht head granthi and additional head granthi in Amritsar on Tuesday. A release issued after the meeting said the clergy suggested to the chief minister that it was objectionable to bring the Sikh community’s revered institutions, Granthi Singhs, gurdwara committees, and congregations under the legal ambit for matters related to maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct). The Sikh high priests demanded that the CM immediately take steps to remove provisions in the law that adversely affect the granthi community, Sikh institutions, gurdwara committees, and Sikh congregations, said the release.
