‘Forced to take 20-km detour’, woman suffers miscarriage

Amritsar: A pregnant woman allegedly suffered miscarriage as road closures and traffic diversions imposed during Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Shukrana Yatra’ that delayed her journey to the hospital in Amritsar. The incident triggered sharp political reactions and public outrage. The woman’s husband, Jugraj Singh, in a viral video, alleged that extensive security arrangements during the CM’s visit prevented them from reaching the hospital on time. According to him, his wife, who was pregnant and undergoing treatment at Guru Amar Das Hospital, remained in severe pain while they were stuck in diverted traffic routes for nearly 40 to 50 minutes. In the video, Jugraj Singh claimed that police barricading and road closures forced them to take a detour of nearly 20 kilometres. “My wife kept suffering in pain inside the vehicle. By the time we reached the hospital, we were informed that she had suffered a miscarriage,” he alleged. The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday when the CM visited Amritsar as part of the govt’s ‘Shukrana Yatra’ and paid obeisance at Golden Temple before proceeding to Tarn Taran.Jugraj Singh appealed to the Punjab govt to ensure that emergency vehicles carrying pregnant women or critically ill patients are not stopped during VIP movements. “Our child will never return, but such incidents should not happen to anyone else,” he said.
