Kohima observes Red Cross Day with walkathon

Dimapur: The Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland state branch, observed World Red Cross Day with a walkathon on the theme “Walk for Humanity” in Kohima on Friday.Volunteers, officials, students, youth, and members of the public participated in the event, which commenced at the Red Cross complex and culminated at Old NST.Kohima DC B Henok Buchem, who is also the president of IRCS Kohima branch, flagged off the walkathon.The occasion featured warm-up sessions conducted by the Nagaland Fitness & Body Building Association.Addressing the gathering, MLA Tseilhoutuo Rhutso highlighted the significance of humanity and compassion in today’s conflict-ridden world.Recalling the life and humanitarian work of Henry Dunant, a Swiss humanitarian, businessman, social activist, and co-founder of the Red Cross, Rhutso said the founder of the Red Cross was inspired to begin humanitarian service after witnessing thousands of wounded soldiers abandoned during the Battle of Solferino in 1859.He noted that Dunant, though not a medical professional, mobilised villagers to help the injured irrespective of which side they belonged to.Rhutso stressed that humanity transcends religion, race, and social barriers, adding that every individual has the responsibility to take a step forward in helping others.He exhorted students and young people to begin practicing humanity through simple acts of kindness in daily life, such as sharing school supplies with classmates in need or being honest and compassionate in their profession and dealings with others.He expressed hope that the walkathon would inspire people to come forward to help those in need and to continue nurturing compassion and humanitarian values in society.
