Gujarat Cong delegation meets SEC officials over ‘coercion’ of candidates

Gandhinagar: A delegation of Congress leaders, led by state party president Amit Chavda, met State Election Commission (SEC) authorities in Gandhinagar on Tuesday and demanded action against persons who have been allegedly coercing Congress candidates to withdraw their nominations in the local body elections.Citing specific instances, the delegation demanded action against police personnel for “unnecessarily harassing” Congress candidates and their families. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chavda said, “Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the last date for withdrawing nominations. Congress candidates are being threatened and all means are being used to force them to withdraw their candidature. There has been a misuse of power.” He added that the SEC authorities have been provided with documentary evidence of Congress candidates being threatened and misuse of power by govt employees. He said that it is the responsibility of the SEC to ensure that elections are held in a free and fair manner and that action should be taken against irregularities.
