Raise credit limit of farmers in cooperative societies: Forum

Bathinda: Farmer forum Kisan Mazdoor Morcha’ Punjab Chapter has raised concern over the decision to put on hold a proposal to increase credit limit of farmers in cooperative societies. Morcha leaders on Tuesday stated that the state government some time ago had issued a notification to increase the credit limit, but now that decision has been put on hold. “Due to rising inflation, farmers’ expenses have increased significantly, and the credit limit must be enhanced immediately,” the Morcha said. The farm leaders also expressed concern over the reports of shortage of urea. The morcha warned that the situation could worsen further before the paddy season. The morcha has decided to hold protests at district-level outside the offices of DROs cooperative societies for three hours on May 18. In areas where the issues of fertilizers and credit limits are more severe, local farmer organizations will also organize additional protests against cooperative societies. The meeting also passed several resolutions, demanding that agriculture should be kept out of the India–USA agreement. The Morcha also demanded the pending sugarcane dues amounting to Rs 230 crore should be released immediately.
