Margao: Transportation of mining dumps from more mines in the South Goa mining belt is likely to begin soon, but an ongoing dispute over trip allocation by one mining firm, which has paralysed transportation days after it resumed following a hiatus of over a decade, has cast a shadow on the revival of mining activity in the belt. The local truck owners’ association is firm on its demand that only trucks from along the transportation route be engaged for carrying the dumps.Transportation in Sanvordem, which resumed last week after more than a decade, halted on Thursday when local truck drivers stopped the firm’s ore movement to protest its use of “outside” trucks. Police and a meeting convened by the Sanguem deputy collector on Friday failed to break the deadlock. On Saturday, stranded loaded trucks reached the jetties under heavy police protection, but no fresh loading took place.Sources said transporters who have won the tenders will also likely transport mining dumps lying in leases along the Rivona-Sanguem route soon. They added that mining activity is also likely to begin in the Kalay mineral block shortly, after which transportation would pick up on a larger scale, engaging a significant number of trucks. That prospect has raised the stakes in the current standoff, since how the Sanvordem dispute is settled could set a precedent for truck engagement on other routes.
Should only local trucks be allowed to transport mining dumps?
