HC refuses to entertain PIL seeking compensation from CJP for protests

New Delhi: Delhi High Court Wednesday declined to entertain a public interest litigation seeking Rs 50 crore as interim compensation from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), alleging that recent protests and demonstrations had caused harassment and inconvenience to the public.A bench of the HC noted that similar issues were already under consideration before Supreme Court, which is hearing several petitions related to protests and demonstrations. It observed that the petitioner was free to raise his pleas before the apex court.“The judicial discipline warrants that, in such an eventuality, this court must stay its hands away from the proceedings and should not pass conflicting orders,” the bench said while refusing to entertain the petition. The petitioner, an advocate, argued that the reliefs sought in the PIL were distinct from those pending before Supreme Court.
