Dhubri: Nine people suspected of entering Assam illegally were apprehended in Dhubri district and handed over to Border Security Force (BSF) for expulsion through the India-Bangladesh border, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X late Tuesday.Sarma reiterated the state govt’s firm stance against illegal infiltration, saying those entering Assam illegally would face legal action. “Last stop: Dhubri. Next step: expulsion,” Sarma wrote in his post on X.“Cross illegally, face the law. Firm borders. Zero compromise. Yeh Naya Assam hai,” he added, reinforcing the govt’s tough approach towards preventing unauthorised entry into the state. The CM did not disclose the identities, nationalities or exact location where the nine people were apprehended. He also did not provide details of the operation or the circumstances leading to their detention. When contacted by TOI, South Salmara-Mankachar superintendent of police Sheetal Kumar declined to share any information on their deportation. “Sorry, I can’t share any information on it,” he said.Dhubri is strategically important to Assam’s border security framework as it shares an international boundary with Bangladesh. Assam shares a 267.5-km border with Bangladesh across four districts — Dhubri, Sribhumi, Cachar and South Salmara-Mankachar.The development comes amid the Assam govt’s continued efforts to strengthen border surveillance and act against alleged illegal infiltration. BSF, which guards the India-Bangladesh international border, plays a crucial role in preventing unauthorised crossings.
