Residents protest GSIDC road works in Calangute
Residents of Porbawaddo, near the Bhodkovodh junction, raised objections on Sunday to the ongoing road divider being built on the Calangute-Mapusa road

Calangute: Activists and locals have sought corrective measures amid mounting alarm due to the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation’s (GSIDC) infrastructure development and road works in Calangute.Residents of Porbawaddo, near the Bhodkovodh junction, raised objections on Sunday to the ongoing road divider being built on the Calangute-Mapusa road after they found their access to the road blocked, making them take a long detour.“There is no permission at all. They’ve simply dug up the road and, in the process, blocked people’s access way. Yesterday, when GSIDC chairman Michael Lobo came, I also went to tell him that what he has done is wrong and our people in Porbawaddo need that access way and to keep an access for them to move out. When all the people gathered there explained to him, he understood and he realised he had made a mistake by blocking it, and now he has kept a 4 m access, ” said panchayat member Prasad Shirodkar.A new road divider being built is also too broad for the narrow road, said activist Walter Lobo. He demanded that the work be stopped immediately.Locals also raised objections after the GSIDC contractor barricaded half the road at Calangute market junction following mishaps at the site, causing traffic jams. The village panchayat stepped in to cover the underground concrete chambers with cement slabs and clear the debris, reducing the blocked road area on Monday evening.
