Pune: Water will flow from three overhead tanks in the Mohammadwadi area to taps in homes by May 10, as the civic administration on Saturday completed the work of laying the transmission line.Officials from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s water supply department said the 19km transmission line was now ready to provide water to three overhead tanks, close to a mall and an international school. Water reached these tanks successfully on May 1. The trials of supplying water through the distribution network will begin now. There is a plan to complete the remaining 4km of transmission line soon to commission five more overhead tanks in the area.Water reaches overhead tanks through the transmission line. The distribution line supplies water from tanks to households.Additional municipal commissioner Pavneet Kaur said, “As a part of equitable water supply scheme, a 23km transmission pipeline is being laid for southern parts and eight elevated service reservoirs (ESRs) have been built. Six dedicated water supply zones have been created and 33km of new distribution network has been developed to provide drinking water to nearly four lakh residents of Mohammadwadi, Dorabjee, NIBM road, Krishnanagar, Jarandenagar, and adjoining areas of Undri and Kondhwa. Household-level water distribution through the newly laid 33km distribution network will begin in a phased manner from May 10.”Rahul Sanap, a resident of the Undri area, said, “We expect the PMC to finish all technical aspects, including trials, at earliest and start the supply of water on a regular basis. The situation till now has been very challenging because of lack of adequate water supply. Overhead tanks were ready but water had not reached these because of the incomplete transmission line. Dependence on water tankers has not only been leading to huge expenses, their presence on roads has caused fatal accidents.“Lack of water supply had pushed several housing societies in the area to depend on water tankers to meet daily requirements. Residents held a series of meetings with the civic officials, demanding completion of the water transmission line work at the earliest.Officials said they faced multiple challenges, including right-of-way constraints, land acquisition hurdles, difficult terrain, shifting of utilities and electric poles, traffic and alignment issues and repeated on-ground obstructions, while carrying out the work.
