Guwahati: Supporters of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Wednesday staged a sit-in protest outside his residence and marched toward the BJP office at Keishampat in Imphal, rejecting the sexual harassment allegations from JNU as a political attempt to discredit him.Holding placards reading “A decent leader we support”, protesters raised slogans against the BJP. Police stopped them when they tried to enter the state BJP office.“Any attempt to suppress Bimol Akoijam is an attempt to suppress the people of Manipur” and “The people of Manipur will stand by Bimol Akoijam,” protesters said, chanting slogans in his support and against the BJP.Akoijam later stepped outside his residence and addressed the gathering at the gate.An FIR was registered on Oct 11 at the Vasant Kunj North police station following a complaint by JNU’s chief security officer.According to an official order, JNU dismissed Akoijam on Oct 9. He has called the dismissal a “witch hunt” and questioned whether due process was followed.
