Guwahati: The Kamakhya Nagar Durga Puja committee is recreating the revered Jagannath Temple as its pandal theme this year, as the community celebrates the festival’s 32nd edition.Committee members said the theme draws inspiration from one of India’s most revered temples, known for its religious significance and architectural heritage.Around 300 families, comprising nearly 1,000 residents, live in the colony. The community celebrates Durga Puja collectively, with themes highlighting cultural diversity, social inclusion and unity.“There are around 300 families, comprising nearly 1,000 people, living in the colony. We celebrate the festival as one big family, which is why we choose themes that reflect cultural diversity, social inclusivity and unity,” said Sanjoy Sengupta, secretary of the committee. The pandal is being constructed with plywood and thermocol and is designed to give it a royal appearance while keeping ecological considerations in mind. The project, including the idol, is estimated to cost around Rs 25 lakh. The 14-foot idol is being crafted by local artisan Nirmal Pal. Construction of the pandal began two to three months ago, with around 22 to 25 workers currently engaged in the work. Organisers expect it to be completed by the fifth day of the festival. The committee has also incorporated the state govt’s vision of a ‘Purple City’ into the decorations, with specially designed lighting planned to enhance the pandal’s appearance. The celebrations will include cultural evenings and competitions aimed at encouraging community participation and strengthening social bonds. Organisers said they were seeking to make the festival more inclusive and engaging for people across age groups.“Several female dhak performers from Bolpur, in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, will be arriving to perform during the festivities. Their traditional drumming will add to the festive atmosphere,” Sengupta also said.
