Burglars loot locked houses in Tiruttani

Chennai: A series of burglaries at Tiruttani created panic after unidentified miscreants broke into multiple locked houses and decamped with gold jewellery, cash and around 6kg of silver articles on Monday night.According to police, the incident took place at Thomur village in Tiruvallur district. Residents including Ramesh, Shanmugam, Ezhumalai and Viji had locked their houses and left for a temple in Tiruvallur. Taking advantage of their absence, the burglars broke open locks late at night, entered the houses and looted a total of about 83 sovereigns of gold jewellery, several kilos of silver articles and nearly 3 lakh in cash from the houses.At Shanmugam’s residence, around 27 sovereigns of gold jewellery and cash were stolen. From milk vendor Ezhumalai’s house, about 7 sovereigns of gold, silver articles and cash were taken. At Viji alias Deva’s house, gold jewellery, silver items and money were also stolen.The burglars also broke into another daily wage worker’s house, but found no valuables. The affected residents lodged a complaint with the Kanakamma Chatram police. Police personnel rushed to the spot, and fingerprint experts, along with sniffer dogs, were pressed into service.
