Ahmedabad: A bridge pillar built out of alignment on the Rs 1,295 crore Narol-Sarkhej elevated corridor was demolished last week, days after construction, raising questions over NHAI’s inspection and quality-control mechanisms. A video of the demolition, carried out in the presence of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, has gone viral on social media. The incident has also sparked questions over how the wrongly aligned pillar, around 15 feet high, escaped detection until it was completed. Despite the apparent lapse, no action has so far been taken against the inspecting officials or contractor, and no notice has reportedly been issued to the contractor, said sources.NHAI sources admitted, “The pillar constructed was of poor quality and the alignment was incorrect. Therefore, we were forced demolish it.”The Narol-Sarkhej elevated corridor, spanning 10.63 km, is scheduled for completion by Feb 15, 2028. The project also involves widening the existing road to six lanes. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has demolished several illegal structures along the alignment over the past year to facilitate the road expansion.
