Lawyer strike over rent bill in Ahmedabad sessions court premises in Bhadra

Ahmedabad: Lawyers at the city civil court in Bhadra continued their strike on Wednesday despite the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) calling off the stir after state govt agreed to accept their demands and make changes to jurisdiction-related provisions in Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026.Members of Ahmedabad Bar Association and Ahmedabad Small Cause Court Bar Association, both based in the Bhadra court campus, decided to continue boycotting court proceedings until Oct 10, as resolved earlier by the associations. On Wednesday morning, Bar members refused to participate in hearings and insisted that the BCG and the presidents of the two Bar associations should not have accepted mere verbal assurances from the state govt. They demanded a written commitment that govt would withdraw the Bill. “This is not possible for the state govt without calling the House to assemble because the Bill has already been passed,” a lawyer said. When Ahmedabad Bar Association president Jagat Choksi insisted that the strike be called off following the BCG’s meeting with state representatives, lawyers refused to agree. Choksi walked away from the gathering, following which Bar members expressed their displeasure and announced that he had been removed as president. They also announced the removal of Small Cause Court Bar president Jayshankar Prajapati. The lawyers announced advocate Vinod Dixit as working president of Ahmedabad Bar Association, with advocates Ilyas Pathan and Kamlesh Patel as vice-presidents. Advocate C V Viramgami was declared working president of the Small Cause Court Bar Association.Contacted later, Choksi said the move to remove him was “ex facie illegal”. “We are the elected representatives of the Bar and a few members cannot remove us at their will in this fashion,” he said. The decision to continue the strike also found support among lawyers in Dholka and Mehsana courts.
