GTU penalises 331 students for exam malpractice

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has announced penalties against 331 students found guilty of unfair practices during its summer examinations, with diploma engineering reporting the highest number of cases.The university detected malpractice across diploma and degree engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and other courses. After hearings, GTU examination committee finalised the punishments. Fifty-nine students were let off without penalty.Of those found guilty, 204 were from diploma engineering, 67 from degree engineering, 45 from MBA, five from Bachelor of Pharmacy, four from MCA, three from vocational courses, two from Master of Pharmacy and one from BCA.The penalties were imposed in five levels. Nineteen students received Level 1 punishment, involving cancellation of the result in the concerned subject. Fifty-four received Level 2 punishment, cancelling results for all subjects in the semester.As many as 196 students received Level 3 punishment, cancelling results for the academic year and barring them from the next semester’s examination. Two students received Level 4 punishment, including a two-semester ban, while one was given Level 5 punishment and barred from the next three examinations.GTU reported mass-copying incidents involving more than 100 students at four colleges in Lunawada, Surat and Rajkot. Action was also taken against the colleges.
