Rajkot: In a tragic morning crash, seven employees associated with the Alang Ship-Breaking Yard were killed when their vehicle rammed into a trailer parked by the roadside near Trapaj village on the Bhavnagar–Somnath National Highway on Tuesday.The accident occurred around 8.30am when the victims were travelling to work in an SUV. The speeding vehicle crashed into the rear of a heavy trailer parked along the highway’s service road. CCTV footage showed the SUV slamming into the stationary trailer with such force that its front half was completely crushed.Six occupants died on the spot, while a seventh, identified as Jayesh Vasani, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.“The trailer was parked on the service road near Trapaj, within the jurisdiction of Alang police station. A Bolero coming from behind crashed into the rear of the trailer. Six persons died at the scene and one succumbed during treatment,” Pandey said.The impact was so severe that the trailer was pushed forward. The SUV was completely wrecked, while some of the bodies were found on the highway, eyewitnesses said. The SUV’s doors had to be prised open with steel bars to extricate the victims.Police and ambulances reached the spot after being alerted. The bodies were taken to a government hospital in Bhavnagar for postmortem.Police identified the other six deceased as Vijay Vora, Piyush Shah, Pritesh Bhayani, Bhargav Gosai, Hiren Mehta and Yogesh Shah. All were residents of villages near Trapaj.
