Husband, in-laws booked for woman’s suicide

Rajkot: A 19-year-old newly wed woman allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the Aji Dam on Sept 27, allegedly due to persistent harassment from her husband and in-laws over wedding debts and demands to sell her personal jewelry, police said.The incident came to light after the deceased Sangeeta Karodiya’s mother lodged a complaint at Thorala police station, naming her husband, his father, brother and sister.Sangeeta married Kishan Karodiya, a resident of Jijuda village in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district, around five months ago. Following the marriage, the couple moved to Rajkot to live with her in-laws.According to the FIR , the woman was repeatedly subjected to mental harassment shortly after the wedding. Sangeeta had reportedly informed her mother Hansa that Kishan, father-in-law Madhu, brother-in-law Magan, and sister-in-law Kajal were pressuring her to extract money from her parental home to settle debts incurred during the wedding.Due to the alleged harassment, Sangeeta had earlier returned to her maternal home and stayed there for about two-and-a-half months. She later returned to her matrimonial home following a settlement, but the mistreatment reportedly persisted.A few days prior to the tragedy, Sangeeta contacted her mother again, alleging that her in-laws were compelling her to sell her nose ring to help clear the debts. When she resisted handing over the jewellry, her in-laws allegedly cast suspicions on her and escalated the harassment.On Sept 27, Sangeeta left the house following an argument with female relatives, her father-in-law Madhu informed the family.The next day, during the search, family members noticed a gathering, police vehicles, and an ambulance stationed near the banks of the Aji Dam, where the body of an unidentified woman had been fished out. Hansa reached the spot and identified the deceased.
