Man held for making casteist remarks at IITB guest house

Mumbai: Powai police on Monday registered a case against a 72-year-old man under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly making casteist remarks at the IIT-B guest house. The man was arrested and released after serving notice. A video of the incident had gone viral.Police said Shyam K had travelled from Jaipur to Mumbai and was staying at the guest house. His son is a former IITB student, and the institute provides guest house accommodation to parents of former students. The man had reportedly visited Mumbai for work or medical reasons. He allegedly made casteist remarks 2-3 times while speaking to a receptionist. The staff member asked him to communicate appropriately, but he allegedly repeated the remarks. Another staff member recorded the interaction.A Powai police officer said the video showed the man making casteist remarks. Police registered the case following a complaint by an IIT-B staff member.
