Man dies by suicide, cop transferred after protests in Valpoi

Panaji/Valpoi: After the family of a 28-year-old man and members of the community led a morcha to the Valpoi police station on Friday, the police sub-inspector (PSI) investigating the case was transferred to the reserve line at the North Goa district headquarters. The family of the deceased man, Moin Shaikh, alleged that the investigating officer had not acted fairly while probing a complaint lodged against Shaikh. They demanded that he be suspended.A senior police officer told TOI that apart from PSI Prathamesh Gawas being transferred from the Valpoi police station, the other demands raised by the family of the deceased man were later met.Marzina Aga, Shaikh’s cousin, said the police took Shaikh into custody after the family of the girl with whom he was friends, filed a complaint alleging he assaulted her. Aga also accused the police of having beaten Shaikh while he was in custody, leading him to die by suicide at home after he was released.Shaikh’s family said they were not informed about his arrest, but learnt about it through external sources and rushed to the police station. Aga also alleged the police did not have the girl — who they alleged Shaikh had assaulted — medically examined. “Police implicated him in the case,” she said.
