Hyderabad: Residents of a housing colony in Jadcherla in Mahabubnagar district were left stunned on Friday morning after they stumbled upon the body of a newborn girl that had likely been attacked by stray dogs. Police officers who reached the spot said it was likely that the newborn’s parents had abandoned her and that the child had been dead for at least a couple of days.Officers added the body was found in bushes along a roadside in one of the colony’s internal roads. Children playing cricket nearby spotted her while searching for their ball and alerted others who called in the police.“We suspect that the newborn was abandoned at a hillock nearby and the dogs later dragged the body into the colony. Our initial investigation suggests that the child was dead by the time the dogs got there. We don’t believe that the dogs killed her,” said B Kamalakar, station house officer (SHO) of Jadcherla town police station.“The newborn had no deformity and the body parts were intact. However, there were dog-bite marks all over.”A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) sections related to suspicious death, suicides or accidents. Police officers have collected records from nearby hospitals to verify details of recent births and are trying to zero in on the newborn’s parents.
