Ahmedabad: A group of 34 residents of a locality in Narol has moved Gujarat High Court, seeking a stay on Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) eviction order instructing them to vacate their homes within seven days, failing which the civic body would demolish their properties. The petitioners, residents of Jagdish Row Houses, have challenged an order passed by AMC’s assistant estate officer of South Zone on Sept 9 under the provisions of Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act.The petitioners argue the order was issued without considering individual objections, the documents presented to the authority, and the consequences of dispossession. The petitioners, mostly labourers and elderly citizens, have been residing in the row houses since around 2013-14. They claim to be the property owners and have furnished utility and tax records. They contend that despite their objections to the notices issued on July 30, the order of protection did not mention proper reasoning or individual findings for each household. The petitioners have also sought the high court’s directions regarding alternative accommodation, rehabilitation, and compensation before any coercive action. After the lawyers’ strike to protest the new Gujarat Rent Bill, the hearing on the petition has been deferred.
