3 Mizo docs save fellow passenger after O2 levels dip on Delhi-Aizawl flight

Aizawl: Three Mizo doctors travelling as passengers on a Delhi-Aizawl flight stepped in to save the life of a fellow passenger after his oxygen saturation (SpO2) level dropped dangerously during the journey on Saturday. The passenger, a dialysis patient returning home after treatment, developed breathing difficulties soon after the IndiGo flight took off from Delhi.Responding to a call from the cabin crew, general surgeon Dr Willie Lalhruaitluanga, paediatrician Dr F Remthangpuii and gastroenterologist Dr Benjamin Khiangte attended to him and provided him emergency care. The patient’s SpO2 had fallen to around 40%. It rose only to around 60% despite oxygen supplied through a mask, prompting the pilot to consider diverting the flight to Kolkata. The doctors administered steroids, following which his oxygen saturation improved to about 90% and the flight continued to Aizawl. However, his condition worsened again, and the doctors considered intubation. As the aircraft did not have the required equipment, they alerted ground staff and asked them to arrange an ambulance before the flight landed. After landing, the passenger was taken to Lengpui Community Health Centre, where doctors used an intubation set to provide the required breathing support. The three doctors then contacted hospitals in Aizawl and secured an ICU bed at LRM Hospital.Dr Willie Lalhruaitluanga and Dr Remthangpuii accompanied the patient to the hospital, while Dr Benjamin Khiangte joined them later.By Saturday night, the patient had been taken off ventilatory support and underwent dialysis. The doctors said the patient’s condition had improved considerably and was no longer critical. They did not want to reveal the identity of the patient
