Hiring Drive Covers Clerks, Firemen, Drivers And Engineers

Chandigarh: In a major step to address its chronic manpower crunch, the municipal corporation (MC) is set to entrust recruitment for 275 vacant Group A, B and C posts to the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), marking the first time the civic body plans to use the Centre’s premier recruitment agency for filling vacancies.MC has formally approached the SSC’s North-West Region office, seeking details of the procedure, financial implications and examination arrangements for conducting a centralised recruitment drive for key posts, including clerks, firemen, engineers, drivers, accountants and enforcement staff. The move follows the UT administration’s approval to fill long-pending vacancies, with a specific direction that recruitment be conducted through a reputed govt agency while adhering to reservation norms. Officials said outsourcing the process to SSC is aimed at ensuring transparency and credibility in appointments. In its communication to SSC, MC sought details of examination modalities, application processing, examination centres, financial requirements and the responsibilities to be shared between the two organisations. The civic body has also asked the commission to spell out the documents needed to process the proposal, including recruitment rules, reservation rosters, vacancy details and eligibility conditions.Officials said the vacancies span several critical departments that have been functioning with skeletal staff for years, affecting service delivery and day-to-day municipal operations.“Once SSC conveys its willingness and shares the applicable charges, terms and conditions, the corporation will proceed with the next steps in the recruitment process,” an MC official said. The proposed recruitment covers 275 posts, including 118 clerks, 79 firemen, 33 drivers, 21 engineers across wings and five enforcement sub-inspectors.Why the hiring drive mattersMC plans to fill 275 vacancies across Groups A, B and CRecruitment likely through SSC for the first timeVacancies include 118 clerks, 79 firemen and 33 driversMove aims to tackle acute staff shortages in key departmentsCivic body hopes to improve delivery of essential municipal services
