Two fresh cases filed against Donga and associates

Rajkot: Two more cases have been registered, at Kalavad Rural and Kalavad Town police stations in Jamnagar district, against alleged moneylender Alpesh Donga, Akshit Akbari alias Happy Patel and others for allegedly cheating farmers on the pretext of arranging low-interest loans.According to the complaints, the accused got sale deeds executed for agricultural land while presenting the transactions as loan agreements. With the two cases in Jamnagar, the number of such cases against Donga has crossed 15. Police are also gathering evidence in four more cases that may be registered in the coming days.Investigators had raided two call centres that were part of this alleged mass-scale cheating operation.Farmer loses land after taking Rs 20 lakh loanIn the complaint filed at Kalavad Rural police station, Paresh Sojitra, 44, alleged that he was contacted in Feb 2025 by a person claiming to represent “Sardar Finance”. As he was looking for a Rs 20 lakh loan, he was called to an office at RK Empire in Rajkot, where he met Donga.After allegedly being promised a loan at 2.5% interest, Sojitra submitted copies of his land records, 7/12 extract, Form 8A, Aadhaar card and PAN card. He was later asked to hand over four blank cheques, which he gave to Akbari.According to the complaint, Akbari later said that Rs 20 lakh had been credited to his account and demanded Rs 15 lakh back. Sojitra alleged that he transferred around Rs 11.20 lakh through RTGS and paid another Rs 3.80 lakh in cash.He was subsequently called to the Kalavad mamlatdar’s office and told that a simple agreement was required. Sojitra said he signed the documents without being informed of their contents and was assured that they would not affect ownership of his land.Later, when he obtained a 7/12 extract for crop finance, he found that the name of Vaghu Dangar had been entered against two parcels — measuring about nine vighas and five vighas.Sojitra said that when he sought restoration of the land, the accused initially demanded Rs 50,000 as interest and later sought Rs 3 crore. The amount was eventually reduced to Rs 1.25 crore. He stated that Rs 63.40 lakh was paid through cheques to Vaghu Dangar, while Rs 61.60 lakh was paid in cash to Ranjit Jalu.He further alleged that the nine-vigha parcel was later registered in his name, while the five-vigha parcel was registered in the name of Dilip Markana.The complaint names Donga, Akshit Akbari, Akash Dangar, Vaghu Dangar, Ranjit Jalu and others under Sections 316(5), 318(4), 308(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Gujarat Money-Lenders Act.Two sale deeds executed for Rs 13 lakh loanIn the second case, a 66-year-old farmer from Haripar village filed a complaint at Kalavad Town police station against Donga, Dharmendra Theshiya, Nagji Nasit and others.The complainant alleged that he approached Donga in June 2022 after he and his son needed funds for a business. During a meeting at Shri Money Plus Sharafi Mandali near Nana Mava Circle in Rajkot, Donga agreed to provide Rs 13 lakh at a monthly interest rate of 2.75%.The farmer alleged that he was told that documents would have to be executed in the names of Theshiya and Nasit. On July 13, 2022, he executed two sale deeds at the Kalavad sub-registrar’s office and received cheques of Rs 6.50 lakh and Rs 6.30 lakh.According to the complaint, the total loan amount was Rs 13 lakh, while Rs 20,000 was retained as expenses. The farmer alleged that Theshiya and Nasit had agreed to cancel the sale deeds after repayment. Despite him repaying Rs 16.87 lakh, the deeds were not cancelled.He alleged that the accused kept delaying the process and threatened to evict him from the land and file a land-grabbing complaint against him.The case has been registered under Sections 409, 386, 389 and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the Gujarat Money-Lenders Act.A recent complaint had also been registered against Donga and others at Gondal taluka police station. Donga, who is currently lodged in jail, was taken into custody for further questioning.Seven cases have so far been registered in Rajkot city and seven in Rajkot rural.Callers targeted women named ‘Geeta’Rajkot Rural superintendent of police Vijay Singh Gurjar said, “We found data of 4,800 women whose names were Geeta. It seems they would target women with the name Geeta to strike up a rapport. The caller would recite a shloka to gain their trust.”According to police, the callers began conversations on religious matters before asking whether families faced financial difficulties and needed loans. Investigators also found that the accused had organised certain religious public functions.
