Agartala: Tension continued in Udaipur on Tuesday after violence broke out in Gamaria area on Monday during village committee elections under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, following the shooting of a TIPRA Motha candidate.Gomati superintendent of police Anirban Das was injured, and a vehicle belonging to Udaipur sub-divisional police officer Debanjali Roy was reportedly vandalised by agitated TIPRA Motha supporters when security personnel tried to restore order. At least three TIPRA Motha supporters were hospitalised after the clashes and related confrontations in Udaipur.CK Jamatia, a TIPRA Motha leader, warned that party supporters could again block national highways in Gomati district if those suspected of shooting party candidate Khachindra Reang are not arrested immediately.The violence began on Monday afternoon at Warengbari during polling for the village committee elections. According to police sources, Reang suffered a bullet injury near his waist. Two others were also reported injured in the incident.Reang was taken to Agartala Government Medical College for further treatment. After the shooting, TIPRA Motha supporters blocked Udaipur-Amarpur road, demanding action.Amid the unrest, a mob reportedly threw stones at security personnel. Das sustained a head injury, while Roy’s vehicle was damaged.Security forces, including personnel from CRPF, Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles, were deployed to prevent further escalation. Police have opened an investigation into the shooting and the violence that followed.Reports said a confrontation involving unidentified people near the polling station led to gunfire. Police said they are examining the identities of those involved and the circumstances that led to the injuries.Supporters of the injured TIPRA Motha candidate alleged that BJP-linked activists were involved in the confrontation. BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma denied the allegation and said the claim was intended to discredit BJP president Abhishek Debroy because the incident occurred in his constituency.Jamatia said it was the responsibility of police to identify those responsible. He also said the allegation of BJP involvement was an assumption made by local party workers.Police are expected to determine the identities and roles of those involved through the investigation. Security was tightened across Udaipur on Monday night as senior administrative and police officials tried to calm protesters and restore traffic on the affected road.
