Shop owner takes on robbers but loses cash

Ludhiana: A group of robbers targeted a building construction material shop on 33 Feet Road in Jamalpur and decamped with cash and a mobile phone on Tuesday. The shop owner managed to briefly nab one of the accused, but the accomplices pelted bricks at him and helped their aide escape.The victim, Ram Nath Gupta, a resident of Mundian area, owns the shop. Gupta and his son, Manish, were present on the premises when the incident took place. According to Gupta, Manish was sitting at the counter and talking on the phone when two men armed with sharp-edged weapons barged into the shop.The accused snatched Manish’s mobile phone and cash from the cash drawer. As they attempted to escape, Gupta chased them. “I managed to catch hold of one of the accused,” Gupta said. “When his accomplices saw that he was in my grip, a third accused, who was sitting on a motorcycle, started pelting bricks at me. Taking advantage of the situation, the robber managed to free himself and flee.”Gupta said the incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the shop. He added that he has lodged a complaint with the police. Officials at Jamalpur police station said a probe has been initiated. Police are examining the CCTV camera footage from the shop and surrounding areas.
