Bengaluru: Nearly 2,500 new vehicles hit the city’s roads every day in Aug 2026, of which about 430 were electric vehicles (EVs), data from the transport department shows. The city accounted for half of Karnataka’s EV registrations during the month, continuing its dominant share of the state’s electric mobility market.Bengaluru registered 76,508 new vehicles during Aug, of which 13,389 were EVs. That means 17.5% of all new vehicles registered in the city during the month were electric, or roughly one in every six. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 9,453 of these registrations, while 1,258 electric cars were added in the month. That translates to an average of about 300 electric two-wheelers and 40 electric cars joining Bengaluru’s roads every day, alongside another 90 EVs belonging to other categories. Electric two-wheelers accounted for about 71% of all EV registrations in the city during the month, with electric cars making up another 9%.
‘Tax exemption removal had no impact’
Across Karnataka, 26,636 EVs were registered in Aug, with Bengaluru accounting for 13,389 – or 50.3% – of the state’s registrations. The city’s accumulated EV fleet cemented its dominance. As of Aug 30, Bengaluru had more than 4.9 lakh registered EVs, compared with nearly 8.9 lakh across Karnataka – meaning the city accounted for about 56% of the state’s total EV fleet.Bengaluru had 3.8 lakh electric two-wheelers and 46,596 electric cars as of Aug. Its electric commercial fleet included 9,922 motor cabs, 6,855 passenger three-wheelers, and 9,876 goods three-wheelers. A total of 2,009 electric buses were registered with the city’s regional transport offices (RTOs).Still ways to goAt the same time, EVs remain a small part of the city’s overall vehicle fleet. Bengaluru had 1.3 crore registered vehicles as of Aug 30, including more than 88.5 lakh two-wheelers and nearly 25.5 lakh cars. The city’s 4.9 lakh EVs, therefore, account for about 3.8% of its total registered vehicle fleet.Karnataka’s overall EV fleet stood at nearly 8.9 lakh as of Aug 2026, comprising 7.3 lakh electric two-wheelers and 65,915 electric cars, apart from electric vehicles in various commercial and other categories. The state’s annual EV registration trend shows how sharply adoption has grown in recent years. Karnataka recorded 7,155 EV registrations in 2019-20. The number rose to 46,140 in 2021-22, crossed the 1-lakh mark in 2022-23, and reached 2.3 lakh in 2025-26. Annual registrations in 2025-26 were more than 32 times the 2019-20 level.
