Ghaziabad: Residents of Shalimar Garden Extension-1 in Sahibabad, particularly around Himsagar Enclave, have complained of a long-standing drainage problem that causes waterlogging and backflow of dirty water onto roads even after light showers. Foul-smelling drain water spills onto the streets and remains stagnant for days, raising health concerns.According to residents, water levels on the street reach up to 1-1.5 feet some days, severely threatening the foundations of residential buildings and causing widespread dampness. The accumulation of contaminated water also creates a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising fears of infectious diseases.Shop owners in the area have also complained that the waterlogging affects the businesses, with water seeping into ground-floor shops, damaging goods and vehicles parked along the streets. Commuters also face inconvenience on this stretch.“The ongoing waterlogging has made it especially difficult for vulnerable community members, including women, children, and the elderly, to navigate the area safely,” said Pradeep Gupta, a resident of Shalimar Garden.Repeated complaints to municipal officials and local leaders have led to no solutions on the ground, with only temporary measures having been taken so far, which have been shown to be insufficient in the long run.In a letter addressed to the GMC, residents have called for a permanent drainage solution, including regular maintenance and efficient water management systems.“The community hopes for a swift response to alleviate the ongoing crisis and restore safety and quality of life in the area,” said Gupta, who demanded sustainable solutions for the neighbourhood’s well-being.A response from GMC officials is awaited on the matter.
