Panaji: The accident record on the Porvorim stretch is notable as nearly the entire road had been identified by Porvorim police and the traffic cell as having three black spots. Between 2022 and 2024, these stretches saw 238 accidents, resulting in 22 deaths and 11 grievous injuries.Official records state that the six-lane elevated corridor was being built to reduce accidents on these sections. The figures have gained renewed attention after two more fatalities were reported soon after the flyover was opened to traffic on Sept 11.Data shows that the NH-66 stretch between Wadakade and O-Coqueiro restaurant recorded 94 accidents between 2022 and 2024. Of these, 10 were serious crashes, resulting in four deaths, five grievous injuries and one minor injury.The second black spot, from Mall de Goa to Hero Circle, saw 62 accidents over three years. It was the deadliest stretch, accounting for 13 deaths, along with three grievous injuries and one minor injury.The stretch from Tiklo petrol pump to Damian de Goa recorded 82 accidents in 2023 and 2024, leading to its classification as a black spot. Five people were killed, while three suffered grievous injuries and five sustained minor injuries.Over the past three years, the state implemented safety measures on 22 problem stretches in North Goa, comprising 16 black spots and six accident-prone zones. In South Goa, measures were taken on 21 stretches, including 14 black spots and seven accident-prone zones.State data shows that no other stretch recorded as many deaths over a three-year period as Porvorim. Officials have said signage is now being prepared for installation, after which the entry and exit points closed following last month’s fatal accident will be reopened.The next worst-performing stretch was at Dhargalim, where nine people died over three years. A flyover is currently under construction there to address the black spot.
