Panchkula: Facing intense public criticism over deteriorating road infrastructure, the Panchkula municipal corporation has allotted road recarpeting contracts worth approximately ₹15 crore to various private agencies.The repair work is scheduled to begin by the end of September following the end of the monsoon season. The allotment follows field surveys conducted by area junior engineers to identify damaged stretches and roads overdue for resurfacing.“Recarpeting will be carried out across Panchkula. All roads are there in our list and the works have been allotted to different agencies for ₹12 to ₹15 crore. After the monsoon, the job will start on a fast pace,” said MC commissioner Vinay Kumar.The civic body had previously struggled with internal staff shortages for patchwork and supply disruptions of bitumen linked to the Iran war. The project also comes after mayor Sham Lal Bansal missed his pledge to eliminate all potholes within the first 100 days of his tenure, which he attributed to sanitation worker shortages and monsoon rains washing away early repairs.While main sector-dividing roads under the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority remain in fair condition, internal sector roads managed by the corporation—including residential lanes behind the Sector 8 and 9 markets and parking lots in Sectors 14 and 20—have remained severely damaged.
