New Delhi: A 45-year-old MCD sanitation worker allegedly died by suicide after being subjected to mental harassment and financial exploitation by a municipal councillor.Police have registered a case under BNS Section 108 (abetment to suicide) against Vijay Kumar, the AAP councillor from Ward No. 192 (Trilokpuri East). TOI tried reaching out to Kumar for a response, but he could not be contacted.The deceased, Deepak, was a resident of Kalyanpuriand used to work in Trilokpuri. He is survived by his wife and children.According to his wife’s complaint, Deepak had been trying to buy a new house and had obtained a loan of Rs 15 lakh with Kumar’s assistance. She alleged that Kumar took possession of the entire loan amount. She also claimed that her husband had not received his salary for the past 10 months.The complaint stated that when Deepak approached Kumar regarding his salary and the loan amount, the councillor allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 for every Rs 1 lakh and threatened to get him transferred if he continued to raise the issue. Kumar also allegedly kept the worker’s identity documents, cheque book, bank passbooks and property papers in his possession.The wife told police that on Sept 1, her husband appeared extremely distressed about the harassment over the loan and his pending salary. He allegedly told her that if anything happened to him or he took an extreme step, Kumar would be responsible.Later that night, he asked his wife to step outside to purchase some items. When she returned home, she allegedly found him hanging on the first floor. With the help of her sister and brother-in-law, she took him to LBS Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
