2 Manipur men get 10 yrs in jail for trafficking 50K Yaba tablets

Silchar: A special NDPS court in Cachar has sentenced two Manipur residents to 10 years in prison for trafficking 50,000 Yaba tablets concealed inside a vehicle’s spare tyre and seized in Silchar in Dec 2024.Special judge Biprajit Roy convicted Liena alias Vanlien Mar (34) and Sonpao alias Jongpao Haokip (47) under Section 22(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act on Friday.The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict. In case of default, they will face an additional six months’ imprisonment.Liena is a resident of Churachandpur district, while Sonpao hails from Tengnoupal district of Manipur.According to the prosecution, police received specific information on Dec 18, 2024, about a large consignment of narcotics being transported from Manipur to Silchar. Acting on the tip-off, a police team intercepted the vehicle at Ghungoor bypass.A search led to the recovery of five packets containing 50,000 Yaba tablets. The contraband had been concealed inside the vehicle’s spare tyre, allegedly to evade detection.Police arrested both occupants and registered a case under the NDPS Act. After completing the investigation, they filed a chargesheet before the special court.Following the examination of evidence and arguments by the prosecution and defence, the court found both accused guilty under Section 22(C) of the NDPS Act and awarded them the 10-year jail term.
