Detentions, rescues across Bengal as cops crack child marriage whip

Behrampore/Jhargram: In a major crackdown against underage marriages and deliveries, Bengal cops made multiple arrests and detentions on Friday. CM Suvendu Adhikari had recently spoken of state govt’s policy of zero tolerance towards child marriage.A boy and a girl, set to be wed, were rescued in Farakka’s Beniagram and their guardians detained. In Kandi’s Kumarshanda, another girl was rescued and placed in a govt shelter. In Gokarna-II, a boy was detained by police while his prospective bride and relatives managed to escape. Earlier in the week, Shamsherganj police thwarted two child marriages in Gajinagar, arresting the girl’s father and a Kazi.Reacting to the crackdown, the CM posted on X: “Our govt remains unyielding in its commitment to protecting our daughters, securing their right to education, and completely eradicating child marriage from our soil.”Murshidabad SP Sachin Makkar said source networks were being strengthened to ensure that children retained access to elementary education.In West Midnapore, Garhbeta police arrested 29-year-old Amnullya Khan after his 16-year-old wife gave birth at a Chandrakona Road nursing home, and charged him under the POCSO Act. SP Papiya Sultana confirmed multiple arrests across the district.
