Gurgaon: A 32-year-old woman allegedly jumped from the fourth floor of a PG accommodation in Farrukhnagar on Tuesday after being repeatedly assaulted and harassed by her husband over demands for money, as alleged by her family.Sushma, who belonged to Rewari, married Mukesh Kumar, a vegetable seller, in 2014, and the couple have an 11-year-old son.In a complaint filed with the police on Thursday, the victim’s brother, Sanjay, stated that Sushma had been subjected to continuous physical and mental harassment since the early days of their marriage. Mukesh repeatedly demanded money from Sushma and threatened to kill her if she failed to get it from her parents.He would also frequently drive her out of the house, with Sanjay recalling an earlier incident when she stayed at her parents’ home after she was thrown out.The brother has alleged that Mukesh later visited them, admitted his mistake and assured the family that he would not assault her again. The family sent her back with Mukesh in June, but the harassment continued, the complaint said.Sanjay said the family received a call from Mukesh around 1 pm on Tuesday informing them that Sushma had left the house. Her family then began looking for her.Around 7:30 pm, Mukesh received a call from Jay Bhagwan, a village pradhan, who allegedly told him that Sushma had died by suicide. Her family came to know of her death the next morning through neighbours, the complaint stated.“The tenants from the nearby areas used to go to the PG for cold water. Therefore, the caretaker did not find anything unusual about her coming to the PG. She tried to go to the terrace which she found locked and then jumped off the fourth floor,” a police officer said.An officer said that the woman had been experiencing mental health issues and was undergoing treatment. “We have found medicines which were prescribed to her,” he said.Based on the complaint of Sushma’s family, a case has been registered under section 108 (abetment to suicide) against the husband at Farrukhnagar police station. The police are examining CCTV footage and verifying the claims made by her family.
