LUCKNOW: 45-year-old Gonda utensil trader Vinod Kumar Sahani, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a sharp-edged weapon attack, triggered a protest at KGMU on Thursday as Cabinet Minister Sanjay Nishad sat on a dharna with the victim’s family and demanded action against police personnel.Sahani, whom Nishad identified as a Nishad Party worker, died at around 3pm while undergoing treatment at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow).The minister reached the hospital’s post-mortem house after learning of the death and joined the family in protest.Nishad demanded the dismissal of the Parsapur SHO, Shahpur police outpost in-charge and other personnel concerned, alleging lapses on the part of the local police.He also warned of a protest at the Gonda SP’s office and residence if action was not taken against the officials.Sahani, a resident of Rexadia village under Parsapur police station, ran a utensil shop in the area. According to police, he was attacked with sharp-edged weapons at around 8pm on Wednesday while returning home after closing his shop.He sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to the Parsapur Community Health Centre, from where he was referred to Gonda Medical College.As his condition remained critical, he was subsequently shifted to KGMU in Lucknow for advanced treatment.Despite efforts to save him, Sahani died on Thursday afternoon.Police have so far arrested two suspects in connection with the attack and formed three teams to trace and apprehend the remaining accused.A case was registered against Shubham Singh alias Golu Singh, Akash Singh and Subhash Singh, along with five to seven unidentified persons.The case was initially registered under provisions related to attempt to murder.Following Sahani’s death, police are now examining the case from the murder angle.Investigators are also working to establish the exact motive behind the attack and identify the role of all those involved.After sitting on dharna with the bereaved family at KGMU, Nishad termed Sahani’s killing condemnable and demanded accountability from the local police.He specifically sought the removal of the Parsapur SHO, Shahpur outpost in-charge and other concerned police personnel.The minister warned that if action was not taken, he would hold a protest at the Gonda superintendent of police’s office and residence.
